BRAND CHANGE COST HOUSTON!

Houston, Texas:  A spokesman from the AFFA league offices announced yesterday evening that the Houston franchise has been fined $15,000 for failing to file the proper paperwork when the team changed brand from Knights to Roughnecks a couple weeks ago.

" The Houston organization has been fined in the amount of $15,000 for neglecting to sufficiently complete application for in season brand change. The Houston franchise failed to turn in one page of the application and left a couple required requests unanswered. The Houston franchise was granted the change from Knights to Roughnecks with the stipulation that the aforementioned penalty be paid within 30 days after change. Brand change would be revoked if said penalty is not paid within this time frame. "  said the spokesman.

Generally by rule a franchise can only request a brand change after the finish of the AFFA season and must be approved by a majority of the league owners. However,  a team may request a " in season exempt brand status " by filing a early brand change application and turned in to the Commissioners office by a predetermined date.

" Obviously their were some issues with the paperwork we filed. We did not intentionally mean to mislead or fail to complete the application. To our best knowledge the required information was delivered completed in its entirety to the league offices in a timely manner. We are currently looking into the matter and will have no further comment at this point and time. " said Roughnecks majority owner Carl Singleton.

During the off season Singleton, a lifelong Houston native, requested to use the " Houston Oilers " brand in memory of his late father who was a die hard Oilers fan. The request was denied due to the NFL currently owned the Oilers brand and trademark.

The now " Houston Roughnecks " wear the same colors as the old Houston Oilers franchise and even have their own version of the " Luv ya blue " team song.

" I believe dad is smiling right now up there somewhere!" said Singleton.
